Chapter 1: The art of designing your Instagram profile | The basics

In this post, i'll be taking you through the most basic of basics on how you can begin to design your Instagram profile. Let's dive right in!

1: Make your account public.

This one is pretty self explanatory. If you have a private account, people won't be able to click on your profile and see your posts immediately, which causes them to click out of the page. Nowadays, people won't bother to request to follow a private account unless you're close friends. This is your first step to putting yourself out there.

2: Take a look at your profile.

Ask yourself these questions:
Are my pictures pleasing to look at? Are they high quality?
Is my profile picture high resolution?
Is my bio simple and clean?

I'll go into detail on what a pleasing-to-look-at theme is like, how to choose a profile picture, and give examples of clean, simple bios.

The aesthetically pleasing Instagram profile.

Everyone has a different aesthetic. Some popular ones are minimal, artsy, grungy, soft, dark, and summery.

The first step to creating a pleasing-to-look-at profile is to find your aesthetic.
Don't know how to do that? Here are some of my favorite Instagram profiles that cater to very specific themes and colors. Feel free to check them out and experiment.

It took me years to get to where I am at today with my profile, so be patient and try to experiment.

My theme before: 2017-2018

My theme now:

The profile pic.

Your profile picture is so important. It's the first thing that people see, whether it be in a comment section, your story, or in a group chat. Your profile picture is your hook. A simple and clear profile picture will attract people to click on your profile and maybe even give you a follow. Pick a photo that's high resolution and minimal.

A TIP: have the profile picture be of yourself or a solid color.

Here are some examples of profile pictures I love.

The instagram bio.

If your goal is to become an influencer, your Instagram bio is a very big part in that. Take a look at your bio now. Is there an excessive amount of emojis? Is there unnecessary information?

(I want to give a disclaimer and say that there is nothing wrong with having lots of emojis and sentences in your bio, I am just giving you my tips and my opinion on what I think is best for a brand-attractive profile.)

Here are some examples of bios you might want to avoid.

name: charity
age: 18
living in: socal

🌸🌻🐹🍏
charity segoine
18
πŸ“Œsocal
πŸ‡°πŸ‡·πŸ‡ΊπŸ‡Έ

Here are some simplified versions of these that are easier to read:

charity, 18
socal

charity segoine
18, socal
πŸ‡°πŸ‡·πŸ‡ΊπŸ‡Έ

If you want to add a little bit of spice, it won't hurt to add two or three emojis:

☁️ charity, 18
🌱socal

🌸 charity segoine
18, socal
πŸ‡°πŸ‡·πŸ‡ΊπŸ‡Έ

It really depends on your style, but just remember to keep it as simple as possible.

A TIP: limit your bio to only 2 or 3 lines, instead of 5 or 6. It will look much less cluttered and easier to read.

My current bio:
πŸ‡°πŸ‡·πŸ‡ΊπŸ‡Έ seoul - los angeles
email for business inquiries

Uneeded words or information in your bio that may make it look cluttered:

Inside jokes
Your friend's names
Excessive amounts of emojis
More than 4 lines of words
Random words
Your hobbies

Putting "email for business inquiries" is also helpful for brands to know where to contact you.

Try something like:

dm/email for business inquires
dm/email for collaborations

One more example of a very simple and effective bio is from @emmaleger

To conclude this post, I want to remind you that your feed and profile does not have to be perfect. Take your time choosing your aesthetic, and once you've found something that you're comfortable with, you can start creating content from there. Just be patient and keep at it, and remember to have fun while doing it!

In my next post, I'll be going into more detail on how to find and keep your aesthetic, how to take good pictures, and how you can begin to organize a feed.

Stay safe loves,
